The Rogue Prince, or, the King's Brother by George R. R. Martin

it took me a long time to put my hands on this considerably new graphic novel by George R. R. Martin but now when I got it. I finished reading The Rogue Prince, or, the King's Brother in one night and I can review this graphic novel like I did with the Dunk and Egg tales.

The Rogue Prince, or, the King's Brother graphic novel just like The Tales of Dunk and Egg is completely different than the ASOIAF books, on the other hand it doesn't really resemble any of the 3 Dunk and Egg tales either. The Tales of Dunk and Egg focused mostly on the two main characters from the title itself with minimal contact to the royal Targaryen family every once in a while. There was a significant presence of the Targaryens in The Hedge Knight and a small attendance in The Mystery Knight but it was nothing compared to what we got to read about in the Rogues.

Targaryen Dragon

In The Rogue Prince, or, the King's Brother we have a completely different story. This graphic novel focuses solely on the Targaryen family during the reign of King Viserys Targaryen the 1st , 100 years after Aegon Targaryen landed on Westeros. The main story of the novel focused on the reign King Viserys and his closest family members: His brother Daemon, his Daughter and his 2nd wife.

The novel starts with the description of Viserys and his rise to the throne after that we get to jump between the mess that his brother Damean keeps on creating and King Viserys is sick of being forced to deal with the conflicts that surface due to his brothers actions. in addition to the Viserys, Damean relationship we get to see how the kings daughter from his first marriage princess Rhaenyra and the Kings wife from his 2nd marriage queen Alicent mixing in the royal court. while most of the time the story is told by an individual that tries to be as objective as possible, the controversial events are generally brought by two "historians" who lived at the time the one is Maester Mellos while the other was the court full Mushroom who supplied more juicy theories and a different point of view to the important events of the royal family.

The entire novel is considerably short and acts as an Introduction to the 2nd novel for The Princess and the Queen or The Blacks and the Greens from Dangerous Women collection. Those graphic novels talk about the distant history of Westeros (at least a lot more distant than the Tales of Dunk and Egg) that is mentioned in ASOIAF as well but it is a lot different and heavier than the Tales of Dunk and Egg. that is why some readers will have difficulties to follow the story (at least in the beginning). towards the middle the plot gets more and more interesting until we are left with the inevitable cliff hanger that makes us pick the 2nd novel (The Princess and the Queen) and keep on going. The Rogue Prince, or, the King's Brother is a must read for every ASOIAF fan, if you read all 5 books and you read The Tales of Dunk and Egg you cannot pass on The Rogue Prince, or, the King's Brother.
